W-HBS CEO on University of Lagos Business Plan Competition Panel

Following the success of the Job Creation and Entrepreneurial Skills Seminar, the Student Affairs Division (Counselling Unit), sent W-HBS CEO an Invitation as a Panelist for the University of Lagos Business Plan Competition alongside Fate Foundation, Women In Management & Business (WIMBIZ), SeedVest, etc.

The Vice-Chancellor had approved the 2012/2013 Business Plan Competition for all undergraduate students of the University of Lagos. The goals of the completion are to:

  1. Promote business ideas in students and encourage them to become entrepreneurs
  2. Sensitize the students on opportunities that exist around them
  3. Provide an opportunity for winners to access cash prizes sponsored by Stanbic-IBTC Bank

 

The areas of focus ranged from agribusiness, information technology, food processing, fashion/garments, environmental preservation, etc. The ten (10) finalists were wonderful, some with ideas worthy of Angel Investment.

 

Below is a brief of our CEO’s favourite:

 

Hipingg.com

Hipingg.com is a free online social networking platform that enables thousands of users to upload photo status updates. Its a social platform that connects people through visual communication.

Users can post their picture updates to the hipingg website using a webcam or via their Blackberry, Nokia, Android and iPhone.

The platform is yet to be launched as it is in the testing stage. However, it was introduced first to the University of Lagos Students to get feedback and since then it has over 92,000 registered members. The current users are not only UNILAG students as many have joined from other schools and even outside the country. The platform has been featured in the media:

  • Vanguard Newspaper (Nigeria) – “redefinition of social media and a startup to look out for”.
  • TechMoran (Kenya) – “a platform where people interact with photo dialogue”
  • Seedstars World (Switzerland) – A worldwide startup competition that featured Hipingg as one of the best startups in Nigeria

The hipingg team are:

Prudence Okoilu, (CEO) Prudence is an internet entrepreneur and undergraduate of the University of Lagos (Unilag), widely known as the founder and CEO of Hipingg. He is a key ingredient and investor that has propelled the growth and development of the young social platform since inception. He was able to turn his love for photography into a social platform for great photo conversation. Prior to hipingg, he was the VP, Advertising at LAGbook.

Ruth Okoilu, (COO) Ruth co-founded Hipingg with her brother Prudence in 2011. Ruth is a Computer Scientist and a first class graduate from the University of Lagos (Unilag). She has been able to represent the company as the COO since March, 2012.

 

The winner was:

Glaberima

Glaberima is the scientific name for our local “ofada rice”. The business takes our ofada rice and creates a model of excellence in the production of ofada rice cuisine. Ofada rice contains more protein, fat with no change in carbohydrate content. It is also rich in the following:

  • fibre and selenium which have shown to substantially reduce the risk of colon cancer.
  • manganese magnesium which can reduce asthma, seizure, lower high blood pressure reduce migraine headaches and also reduce the risk of heart attacks and stroke

Glaberima is providing high quality and nutritional cuisine of ofada rice to students in University of Lagos and also offers outdoor catering, They were the official caterer for Mr. and Miss Unilag 2013, Faculty of Arts Association and Law Student Society Chowdown.

Anifowose Segun Johnson is the CEO and has had prior experience as a Waiter, Waiter Manager, Purchase Officer, Cook, Chief Chef all at catering companies and also experience at a General Hospital as a Records Officer.

  • Alberta Events Limited – an event planning and consulting organisation (2nd Place winner)
  • Clothing Store (Start-up) – Ready to ear clothing line and dressmaking (3rd Place Winner)
  • NRA (Nylon Recycling Agency) – environmental preservation
  • Laundry & Drycleaning
  • Smoked catfish
  • La Royal Fisheries – fish farm
  • Oleku – Fashion business
  • SollyOLak Tech – a technical engineering business

It was indeed a fun time. Nigerian youths are indeed entrepreneurial…….
